DANIEL KALINAKI ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE EASTERN AFRICA EDITORS’ SOCIETY

Lusaka: 12 May 2023: The Eastern Africa Editors’ Society today elected Daniel Kalinaki, the chair of the Uganda Editors’ Guild, as its next President.

Mr. Kalinaki was elected unanimously during the Society’s Annual General Meeting by representatives from the Kenya Editors’ Guild, Tanzania Editors’ Forum and the Editors’ Guild of Ethiopia.

He will preside over the Society for the next 12 months before handing over the rotational presidency to the chair of the Tanzania Editors’ Forum, Deodatus Balile.

Mr. Kalinaki takes over from Churchill Otieno, the immediate past President of the Kenya Editors’ Guild, who has been president since the founding of the Society in 2021.

“The need for editors to cooperate and collaborate within and across borders has never been greater given the challenges facing the media industry,” Mr. Kalinaki said. “I am grateful for the confidence of my peers, and for the tremendous work Mr. Otieno has put into getting the Society off the ground.”

A 25-year newsroom veteran, Mr. Kalinaki heads Nation Media Group’s editorial operations in Uganda which include the Daily Monitor newspaper, leading television station NTV, and two radio stations: KFM and Dembe FM. He has previously overseen The EastAfrican newspaper, and NMG’s Africa newsroom.

At the same time, the EAES Governing Council has appointed Churchill Otieno the Executive Director of the EAES Executive Committee for a period of four years, starting from June 2023.
